How can we find out if a family was part of the mob or part of the witness protection program?

We had a family move into our neighborhood in 1980 from the East coast. The family is in the “trucking” business. There is no history of the family anywhere. Everyone think the dad was in the mafia. How can a family just appear out of nowhere?
